As spring sports begin to ramp up, athletes across the school are preparing for another competitive season. From soccer and track to golf, baseball, and softball, teams are getting back into competition and working hard in practice to prepare for the weeks ahead. Players are setting goals, improving their skills, and looking forward to representing the school throughout the season. Five athletes shared what they are most excited about and what they hope to accomplish this year.
For the girls soccer team, Cate Dugan is looking forward to spending time competing alongside her teammates. After finishing last season with a 5–8–2 record, the team is focused on improving their shooting and finding ways to create more scoring opportunities. Dugan plays midfield, a position she enjoys because it allows her to run all over the field and be involved in both offense and defense. One of the fun goals she mentioned for the season is scoring a goal from the 35-yard line.
On the track team, Braylen Dold has his sights set on the postseason. He says the regional meet is the event he is most excited about because it determines who advances to state. Dold’s main event is the long jump, where his personal record from last season stands at 20 feet, 10.5 inches. His biggest goal this year is to medal at the state meet. During competitions, Dold stays focused by listening to music and watching his teammates compete while he waits for his events, helping him stay locked in and ready to perform.
Meanwhile on the golf team, Jarren McFadden is focused on steady improvement throughout the season. His main goals are to lower his scores and make smarter decisions on the course. According to McFadden, one of the most challenging parts of golf is staying mentally composed after a bad shot or a difficult hole. To improve, he has been spending extra time working on his putting. One of his favorite courses he has played so far is Sand Creek Station in Newton.
With athletes motivated and goals set, the upcoming spring season looks promising for soccer, track, and golf. As practices continue and competitions begin, these athletes—and many others—will be working hard to improve, support their teammates, and make this season one to remember.
The Garden Plain and Andale baseball team is looking strong this season as players from both schools come together to form a competitive and well-rounded group. Jared Flax stated “I’m excited to beat Mulvane this year.” With a focus on solid pitching, smart base running, and consistent hitting, the team is working hard to build chemistry and improve each game. The combination of talent from both programs gives them an advantage and sets high expectations for a successful season.
The softball team, also combined between Garden Plain and Andale, is showing great potential early on. Coti Hiner says “I’m hoping we make it to state this year.” With strong defensive play and powerful bats in the lineup, the team is aiming to compete at a high level. Teamwork and communication have been key as the players adjust to playing together, and their determination and effort are helping them grow stronger with each game.
